Santorini has today a fertile soil, because of the eruption, ,which has made the island famous for its products.
It produces a wine of excellent quality but only in small quantities. All over the island, you can see short vine trees. There are made in a way that you will only find in Santorini, and look like baskets, in order to be protected from the strong winds.
Others famous local products are the "Fava", a vegetable smaller than a pea, the small tomato which only grows in Santorini as a result of the lack of water and the kapari, a vegetable of the size of peas with a strong peculiar taste, used within the famous Horiatiki(Greek Salad).
These products have a great success all over the world.
You can also find a kind of cheese called "chloro", made from goat's milk.
Santorini also exports a product which is related to the eruptions: the famous pumice stone, which is used all over the world for different uses.
You can find everything you wish for, at any price in Fira. We nevertheless advise you to stay away from the commercial restaurants and try to find some traditional family owned taverns where you usually eat better and a lot cheaper.
The speciality of Santorini is the tomatokeftedes (tomato nuggets).
The wine produced in Santorini is famous all over the world. It is made in the traditional way and is strong and tasty. There are three kinds of wines produced on the island:
- Brusko - Red / dry / strong
- Nichteri - White / dry / strong
- Vissando - Red / sweet / extremely strong (reminds of a liqueur)
The wines are stored in kanaves (cellars). You can test wines in different wineries:
- Boutari (Megalochori)
- Antoniou (Megalochori)
- Canava Roussos (Mesa Gonia)
- Koutsoyannopoulos (Messaria)
- Santo Wines (Pyrgos)
- Sigalas (Oia)
