Profitis
Ilias monastery
is located on the peak of the mountain Profitis Ilias. The
construction started on 1771 by the monks Gabriel and Joachim at
height of 550 meters. The monastery took its presents in the
middle of the 19th century when the King Othon
visited Santorini. In the monastery you will find many
ecclesiastical articles of inestimable value, icons of the 15th
& 18th century, an iron Cross of the 12th
century, diamond-adorned mitre of the Patriarch Gregory E’ and
much more.
The
Greek nunnery named Agios Nikolaos in Imerovigli is also
something you shouldn’t miss. In this nunnery are a number of
portraits of bishops painted hundreds years ago. It is located
in Imerovigli and it was built in 1674.
In
Megalochori village is the church of Agios Nikolaos
Marmaritis. It is called Marmaritis (marble) because the
whole building is made of marble. This church was a pagan temple
of the Doric style before the 4th century A.D.
The
Metropolitan church Ypapanti was built on 1827 by Marcos
Belonias and that is why it is called “Panagia of Belonia”.
With the devastating earthquake of 1956 the church was destroyed
and in its place is now a new church named Metamorphosis. It is
located in Fira town where the Catholic Church and the Convent
of the Dominican Order are.
Panagia
Malteza,
located in Imerovigli is very interesting. It called Malteza
(Maltese) because Virgin Mary’s icon found on the port of Malta
by a Santorinian Captain and he brought it to Santorini and
built a church for it.
Panagia
I Trypa “Virgin of the Crypt”
is located in Vothona village and was built on 1700. The church
got its name because it was used as a shelter by the people
during the attacks by pirates. The church is built 20 meters
from the ground on a raised parapet called trafos. After people
had climbed on the parapet they pulled the wooden ladder and the
20 meters that separated them from the ground provided them
protection from the pirates.
