In
Santorini Island anywhere you look you will see a
church. There is saying that there are more churches
than the days of a year, from tiny ones to large and
elegant ones. All of them are whitewashed with blue
domes. Santorini has Byzantine churches, Orthodox
churches, Cathedral churches, Greek & Catholic nunnery
and more. |
Fira
is the seat for both a Catholic or an Orthodox bishop. In
Santorini they usually have religious festivals. Everyone is
invited and treated with a traditional meal of dried peas, and
onion soup followed by singing and folk dancing. Some of the
dates to keep in your itinerary are: 20/07 and 15/08 every year.
Agios
Nickolas
is a church that you will find everywhere in Santorini because
he is the protector of our shipmen’s. Most of the churches in
Santorini have been built by seamen whose patron Saint saved
them from storms or other great dangers. The Convent of St.
Nickolas is the oldest of the island and it was build in
1815-1820. Originally the convent was built in inaccessible
castle of Skaros but the nuns moved it to its present position.
On 1651 Gyzis family got a permission from the Bishop to convert
the small church to a convent. It became property of the Greek
state on 1849.
Agios
Stefanos
is the oldest church on Santorini. It was built between the 4th
and 5th century. It is located in Mesa Vouno and it
shows that Christianity came to the island since then.
Episkopi
Gonias
Church is in the area of the village Mesa Gonia. It is a church
dedicated to the “Assumption of the Virgin”. It was built in the
end of the 11th century (around 1115) and it has
survived many invasions, fires (it is said that a hand of Virgin
Mary covered them by the fire and protected them from being
burned) and the devastating earthquake of 1956. Some hagiography
of the century is still preserved, Byzantine icons, and marble
sculptures are worth seeing. The church is considered the best
example of traditional ecclesiastical architecture. August 15th
is the feast day.
